Scott’s work embodies a remarkable transformation, a journey from structural to abstract and from the literal to the conceptual. He began with solid, hollow forms, sculptures that emphasized volume and mass with a tangible physicality. Over time, the exploration shifted, seeking to strip these forms down to their most essential state. This pursuit led to the I-beam—a structural icon of modern architecture. He uses the I-beam as the foundation for sculptures because of its minimalist yet powerful design. Composed of two flanges and one web, the I-beam efficiently uses the least amount of material while maintaining incredible strength and longevity. This structural integrity aligns with the vision for creating enduring, minimal forms that balance simplicity with impact, providing the perfect medium for his artistic expression.
Through Scott’s vision, the I-beam was reimagined. No longer confined to its role as an architectural support, it became a sculptural language, simultaneously structural and figurative. By fabricating the I-beam into fragmented, almost human-like forms, he liberated it from its functional identity, reshaping it into something poetic and expressive.
While the I-beam work is a defining element of his artistic practice, it is not the entirety of the creative expression. He explores other styles and approaches, allowing the work to span a broader spectrum of artistic possibilities. These additional explorations enrich the body of work, providing a counterbalance to the industrial strength of the I-beam while further showcasing his versatility and vision.
Scott collaborates closely with clients to envision his art to their space. Clients sometimes select an existing design to be fabricated especially for them, altering the size or finish to fit their site, while other times he creates entirely new designs tailored to their preferences. This collaborative process allows the work to be both personal and impactful, bridging his artistic vision with the unique desires of those who engage with it.
Scott’s sculptures, in all their forms, inhabit a space where the industrial meets the personal. His work is a meditation on strength and refinement, merging the inherent rigidity of materials with a newfound grace and nuance. It’s a process of reinvention that turns elemental forms into profound explorations of the balance between utility and artistry.
